Resorption

Your Tooth is Rejected by your Immune System

You have no idea something distribute is occurring until symptoms develop. This is not preventable and not related to brushing and flossing.  Best defense is having a relationship with your dentist and he monitors your teeth with radiographs to for early detection and diagnosis.

 

Tooth resorption is a process by which all or part of a tooth structure is lost due to activation of the body's innate capacity to remove mineralized tissue, as mediated via cells such as osteoclasts. Types include external resorption and internal resorption. It can be due to trauma, infection, or hyperplasia.

With advanced imaging-3 dimensional CBCT we are able to determine location and involvement. Treatment options vary and dental history is important-trauma even 20 years ago; orthodontic movement, gingival grafts and bruxism play an important role in this process.

Internal Resorption

Importance of Periapical Radiographs

By this definition, internal resorption is “a defect of the internal aspect of the root following necrosis of odontoblasts as a result of chronic inflammation and bacterial invasion of the pulp tissue.” (3) Contributing factors include caries, trauma, and restorative procedures. (3)

External Resorption

External resorption is “resorption initiated in the periodontium and initially affecting the external surfaces of the tooth—may be further classified as surface, inflammatory, or replacement, or by location as cervical, lateral, or apical; may or may not invade the dental pulpal space.” (3) It may arise as a sequel of traumatic injury, orthodontic tooth movement, or chronic infection of the pulp or periodontal structures.” (4)

An accurate definitive diagnosis will, therefore, depend on the practitioner’s understanding of what is “normal.” Radiographic interpretation is paramount, and Gartner, et al. (2) produced a summary that assists in this differentiation
